Petrie Park Update December 2023

Dec 18, 2023 | Active Richmond, Educate Richmond, Healthy Richmond, Heritage Richmond, RR&BA

By Hayley Guglietta

The Petrie Park bowling club remediation is well and truly underway. We have completed the first round of soil testing which has indicated higher than normal levels of arsenic, especially around where the old bowling club shed used to be. High levels of arsenic were expected, given the chemicals used to maintain bowling greens across the country.

This summer we are installing a transitional bedding display in the shape of a game of bowls. We are planting red Mizuna to represent the black bowling ball, but this family of plant is also know for extracting the unwanted chemicals in the soil. Once this display has finished its life cycle, we will re-test both the planted and non-planted areas to see if there are differing results. If the use of red Mizuna is successful in lowering chemical levels, we will plan another planting day and keep testing until we have remediated the soil completely.

If you get a chance, pop on down to the southern half of Petrie Park and check out our progress. There are also signs dotted around the southern portion of the fence.
